Melinda Joy Britton's Obituary
Melinda Joy Britton, 68, of Big Rapids, passed away Monday, January 5, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born December 7, 1957, in Big Rapids, the daughter of Glen and Marie (Schroeder) Sack. Mindy attended St. Peter’s Lutheran School from kindergarten through eighth grade and remained a lifelong, faithful member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church. She graduated from Big Rapids High School in 1976.
On June 2, 1979, Mindy married Don Britton, and together they made their home in the Big Rapids and Mecosta area for their entire married life. She worked as an administrative assistant at Ferris State University for many years, retiring in 2017.
Known to many as “Mindy,” she had a wonderful sense of humor and a deeply caring heart. She was the rock of her family, a guiding light, and a devoted caregiver, lovingly caring for her husband Don over the past several years. She loved making memories with her family and was a fun, proud “Oma” to her grandchildren. Strong-willed in the best way, she embraced her German heritage, enjoying beer, polka music, and family traditions.
Mindy was a loyal sports fan, cheering for the Detroit Tigers, Ferris State Bulldogs, and Big Rapids Cardinals. She rarely missed her children’s or grandchildren’s sporting events, especially enjoying watching her grandson play hockey and attending her daughter’s softball games whether she was playing or coaching. She also had a special place in her heart for her children’s friends and was always there to support them, as well.
Her faith was central to her life, and she lived it out daily through kindness and service. After retiring, she volunteered at Manna Pantry, continuing her lifelong commitment to helping others.
Mindy is survived by her loving husband, Don Britton; her children, Nicholas Britton, Megan (Josef) Ackroyd, and Kristen Britton; grandchildren, Brayden, Madison, Johanna, and Isabella; brothers Terry (Terry) Sack and Tim (Diane) Sack; several nieces, nephews, aunts, and cousins, and many dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents.
She will be remembered for her strength, faith, generosity, and the unwavering love she shared with everyone fortunate enough to know her.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m., Thursday, January 8, 2026, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Big Rapids, with Pastor Tyson Bentz officiating. Mindy’s family will greet friends beginning at 10:00 a.m., Thursday at the church. She will be laid to rest in the Zion Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in her name may be made to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church or School. Care and arrangements are entrusted to Mohnke Janowicz Funeral Home in Big Rapids.
