Douglas Milton Gregerson's Obituary
Douglas Milton Gregerson, age 90, of Canadian Lakes, Michigan, passed away on February 28, 2026, at Butterworth hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan, with his loving family in his heart.
Douglas was born on August 26, 1935, to Harvey Gregerson and Emma Elaine Hill. A proud veteran of the United States Navy, he faithfully served his country before returning home to build a life defined by dedication, service, and love.
On July 20, 1956, Douglas married the love of his life, Marlene Kinell. Together they shared an incredible 70 years of marriage, creating a lifetime of memories filled with devotion, laughter, and unwavering partnership. Their love story was one of true companionship.
Douglas served his community as a firefighter with the Melvindale Fire Department for 25 years before retiring from active service. He was a man of courage and commitment, always ready to help others. Described by those who knew him as a sweet and gentle man, Douglas never met a stranger — he hugged everyone and always had kind, positive words to share. He carried himself with intelligence, confidence, and the quiet dignity of a true gentleman.
A talented builder, Douglas constructed his own homes with skill and pride. He enjoyed camping, fishing, and golfing, and was a devoted fan of the Detroit Lions. He adored his cat, Tiger, and treasured simple joys in life. Douglas and Marlene were faithful attendees of Chapel of the Lakes in Mecosta, where their faith remained a cornerstone of their lives.
The couple especially enjoyed their Thursday outings to Soaring Eagle and Meijer in Mount Pleasant, as well as their trips to Las Vegas — where Douglas proudly claimed victory at the nickel slots time and time again.
Above all, Douglas was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His family was his greatest accomplishment and deepest joy.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Marlene Gregerson; his children, Douglas (Ann) Gregerson Jr., Holly (Dan) Russette, and Wendy (Jim) Bernardo; his sister, Karen Holmfeld; his grandchildren, Caroline (Jared) Long, Douglas Gregerson, Kathryn Russette, Danny Russette, Ellyn Bernardo, and Sabrina Bernardo; and his great-grandchildren, Margot Long and Sophia Long. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Douglas was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Harvey and Timothy Gregerson; and his granddaughter, Kelly Russette.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a local fire department charity in honor of Douglas’ years of dedicated service.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 6, at 11:00 a.m. at Chapel of the Lakes in Mecosta, with family receiving friends one hour prior to the service. Visitation will take place from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 5, at Janowicz Family Funeral Home in Remus, Michigan.
Douglas’ legacy of kindness, strength, and positivity will live on in all who were blessed to know and love him.
