Big Rapids John D. McLeod, 88, of Reed City, formerly of Big Rapids, passed away Sunday, August 24, 2008, at Spectrum Health Care Facility in Reed City.
He was born August 14, 1920, in Big Rapids, the son of Kenneth and Emily (Pollington) McLeod, and as a young boy he spent time on the Van Gilder farm. John graduated from Big Rapids High School in 1940, where he was a proud member of the band, playing his French horn and Peck horn.
During World War II, John served with the U.S. Army. Following his discharge, John moved to Blaney Park near Manistique in 1946, where he worked as painter and maintenance person at Blaney Park Resort. While there, he met Marie Grenier, and the couple wed on November 20, 1948. They worked at the resort for over 20 years until moving to California to work for several years, and then returned to Big Rapids in 1971.
John was a self-employed painter while living in Big Rapids and later Hawkins. After retiring, he moved to Reed City in 1982, and worked as a night watchman at Tubelite.
An avid hunter and fisherman, John truly enjoyed the Michigan outdoors. He loved the Detroit Tigers, and many Tiger players stayed at the resort while John worked there. He also helped fly planes in and out of the resort, and was a member of the BPO Elks and the American Legion.
His wife Marie preceded John in death in 1998. Surviving are their children, Valerie Kinomoto of Gulliver Lake, Vicki McLeod of Delaware, Douglas (Lorie) McLeod of Big Rapids, Patti (Al) Bickel of Big Rapids, and Jamie (Liz) McLeod of Reed City; 9 grandchildren, Bryan, Spencer, Travis, Eric, Colin, Emily, Russ, Jacob, and Katie; 2 great-grandsons, Gavin and Tyler; 2 sisters-in-law, Dede Snyder of Gulliver and Dorothy McLeod of Victorville, CA; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. John was also preceded in death by a grandson, John Douglas McLeod, brothers Don, Charles, and Rob, and sisters Ruth Ann, Lillie Mae, and Mary Belle.
A celebration of Johns life will be held on Saturday, August 30, from 2-5 p.m., at his residence, 213 W. Slosson Avenue in Reed City, where friends are welcome. Following cremation, his remains will be interred in the Fairview Cemetery in Manistique. Arrangements are entrusted to the Mohnke Funeral Home in Big Rapids.
