I have been thinking about Kilman for the past several weeks and wondering how he was doing. I was going to try to phone him last weekend and did not get to it, my loss.
I always liked Kilman. The more I got to know him the better I liked him. He had a very active and fertile mind. Using the web he did lots of research into his cancer, and even while he was wrestling with his own illness he would take the time to send me web articles about a latest development in heart diseases because he remembered that I had 2 stents.
He had a great sense of humor too; I remember one time when I went to lunch with him at a Chinese restaurant in Grand Rapids. As we were entering the door he turned to me and said “Don’t let on that I am Korean, they think I’m from China in here.” I said “Which part?” He responded quickly, “Beijing.” He then proceeded to speak Chinese with the hostess. As we sat down he said that he always gets better service in Chinese restaurants when the owners think he is from China.
I always felt that the world was a better place for Kilman being in it. Now I feel that it is a lesser place for his departure. I shall miss his presence, even from this distance. I shall toast his life tonight at> dinner and wish him well on this trip too.
