Big Rapids – Lela E. Hurless, 93, of Big Rapids, passed away Friday, June 5, 2009 at her residence.

She was born September 23, 1915, in Columbia, Kentucky, the daughter of James M. and Mary E. (Roy) Combest. She was the fourth oldest of eleven children.

Lela was a licensed cosmetologist. She also worked at and retired from Ferris State University.

She was a member of the Big Rapids Church of the Nazarene since 1964. Lela was known best to friends and family for her amazing cooking and pie/cake baking skills.

In 1944, Lela married James Hurless who preceded her in death in 1995. She is survived by a sister, Mary Hutchings of Atlanta, Georgia; 1 sister-in-law, Faye Combest of Chicago; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m., Monday, June 8, 2009, at the Big Rapids Church of the Nazarene, with Rev. Harold Gilkerson officiating.  Burial will be in the Highland View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions for the Big Rapids Church of the Nazarene, 514 Woodward, Big Rapids, MI 49307, where Lela’s family will greet friends prior to services on Monday.
