Evelyn M. Carlson

Big Rapids –Evelyn Mae (Langworthy) Carlson, 79, of Big Rapids, passed away Sunday, May 31, 2009, at her residence in Norwich Township.

She was born October 9, 1929, in Grant Center, the daughter of Bruce and Lila (VanAlstine) Langworthy, and graduated from Big Rapids High School in 1949.  On June 21 of that year, she married Carl E. Carlson, and moved to their farm in Norwich Township where she has lived since.

Evelyn worked in specialized nursing at Mecosta Memorial Hospital in Stanwood, and then later at Mecosta County General Hospital.  She also was a volunteer for the United Way and the American Cancer Society.

Before there was “day-care”, there was Evelyn, doing her part to help the working mothers of the community raise their children.  For years, the kids came before school, during the day, and after school to the home and arms of a caring woman.

As a 4-H leader, Evelyn enjoyed teaching the girls to sew; her secret passion was dress designing.  She was a member of the PTO at Pineview Elementary School, and often accompanied Carl as a chaperone for the 8th grade trip to Mackinac Island.

Evelyn also lovecd to cook and was always willing to set an extra place at the table.  Planning meals for family gatherings was her special talent.  She cherished her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and was looking forward to the birth of her next great-granddaughter Hayley in about 4 weeks.  Evelyn was a highly respected member of her community, and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Her husband Carl preceded her in death on April 27, 2008.  Surviving are their children, Carl Jr. (Phyllis) Carlson, Linda Aldrich, Carmen Bechaz, and Terry (Carla) Carlson, all of Big Rapids; 6 grandchildren, Johnny (Jenna) Aldrich, Jim Aldrich, Julie (Jesse) Waldron, Timothy Bechaz, Trevor Carlson, and Erin Carlson; 7 great-grandchildren, Montana, Micajah, Logan, Dakota, Keagan, Ayden, and Riley; 3 brothers, Eldon (Donna), Melvin (Edna), and Norman Langworthy, all of Big Rapids; sister Shirley Langworthy of Evart; sisters-in-law Pat, Gail, and Barbara Langworthy, and Donna Carlson; several nieces and nephews; and her good friend Lois Halbert.  Evelyn was also preceded in death by her parents and her brothers Charles and Elwood Langworthy.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 3, at the Mohnke Funeral Home Funeral Home in Big Rapids, with Foster Brummel officiating.  Burial will follow in the Hungerford Cemetery.  Evelyn’s family will greet friends at the funeral home today (Tuesday) from 1-3 and 7-9 p.m., and prior to services on Wednesday.
