Big Rapids – Carl A. Unger, 80, of Paris, passed away Wednesday, April 22, 2009 at Spectrum Health Butterworth in Grand Rapids.

He was born August 21, 1928, in Wyandotte, the son of Alvin and Emma (Ziesmer) Unger.  In 1956, Carl moved to Big Rapids for employment, and to pursue his life long love of the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing with his family.  For 4 decades, Carl worked as an auto mechanic at JC Waddell (later Carriage Motors) until retiring in 1994.

Carl was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Evart. 

In 1950, he married Shirley Hildebrand, who preceded him in death in 1997.  Surviving are their children, Greg, Gary, Ron, Keith, Ken, John, Teresa, Bob, Rick, and Ed; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Terry Herwy of Paris, and Betty Donnelly of Wyandotte; and many nieces and nephews.  Carl was also preceded in death by a son Tom in 1987, and 5 sisters, Beatrice, Leona, Emma, Edna, and Florine.

The Funeral Mass for Carl will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 28, 2009, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with Father Joe Fix officiating.  Burial will be in the Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Big Rapids.  His family will greet friends at the church on Monday, April 27, from 7-9 p.m., with a Rosary Service beginning at 8:00 p.m.  Arrangements are entrusted to the Mohnke Funeral Home in Big Rapids.  Share a memory or express condolences at www.mohnkefuneralhome.com
